Chef Joseph Lenn is back in the kitchen. Lenn made a name for himself as the chef of Tennessee's fine-dining destination Blackberry Farm, where he spent 10 years — five as executive chef — and where he became the first person in Tennessee to win the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast. Lenn left Blackberry Farm last year to open his own place in nearby Knoxville, and earlier this month, J.C. Holdway let in its first eager customers.

It's taken more than a year to get there, but Chef Joseph Lenn officially is back in the kitchen with the Tuesday afternoon opening of J.C. Holdway Restaurant, 501 Union Ave. This is Lenn's first chef-owned operation since the Knoxville native left Walland's Blackberry Farm in April 2015 after 10 years of service.

Johnson Architecture Inc. is no stranger to working with restaurants. In addition to Blackberry Farm and Copper Cellar, the newly opened J.C. Holdway Restaurant on Union Avenue is one of its latest clients. Daryl Johnson, CEO of Johnson Architect, and Jeff Williamson, the point person for the project, said the biggest challenge was creating a design that took advantage of all the window space without impacting the view.

Chef Joseph Lenn has confirmed that the opening of his Knoxville restaurant — J.C. Holdway — will occur "just after Labor Day'. That's if all goes as planned. The restaurant, located in the Daylight Building at 501 Union Ave., has been under construction for nearly a year. It is named after Lenn's late great uncle, J.C. Holdway, who was a lover of restaurant dining.
